Need for the Program:
Whenever there are Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) or other neurological illnesses such as Stroke, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease etc., occur, there are associated Visual issues and Ocular disturbances. Such patients can experience a wide variety of symptoms including double vision, squinting of eyes, restricted eye movements, reading and writing difficulties, focussiong difficulties from distance to near and vice versa, cognitive disabilities, converging and accommodating difficulties and so on.The management of such disorders require a high level of knowledge of established diagnostic protocols and treatment modalities. This intensive Clinical program aims to equip the eye care practioner with the right mixture of Knowledge, Skills and Attitude in handling such complex situations in a practical set-up
Scope and Objectives:
The Neuro optometry fellowship course is a 6 month programme designed to provide intensive optometric clinical experience in evaluating patients with Traumatic brain injury and Cerebrovascular Accidents such as Stroke, Post cranial nerve surgeries. The fellowship will help to understand the specialized evaluation protocols and rehabilitating the visual issues with brain injured individuals. The fellowship programme will provide opportunity to work with the diverse population in the Neuro-Optometry clinic at Sankara Nethralaya. The fellowship also aims to train for teaching and to conduct prospective research activities in the field of Neuro-optometry.
Eligibility criteria

Optometrists with B.S / M.Phil / M.Optom / Ph. D degrees with prior work experience in BV clinic (atleast for a year)

Optometrists who are inclined to start Neuro Optometry practice in their respective institution would be given preference
- Diploma holders with 5 years experience and / or experience in Binocular vision clinics
- Ophthalmologist with prior experience in BV clinics
Duration:
6 months - one month prior online learning followed by 6 months Intensive Clinical Training course leading to the Fellowship in Neuro-Optometry on completion
Course commencement: January 2015
Course Fee: Rs 60,000/-
Frequency: 4 times in a year (Jan / April / July /October)
Maximum Intake: 2 seats per session
