Dr. S. Meenakshi obtained her M.B.B.S degree from the Madras Medical College in 1988, and M.S. (Ophthalmology) training from Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) in the year 1992. She then did a research fellowship in Cornea at the University of Texas at Houston , in 1994-95. She then did a mandatory Transitional Year Residency program at the Kettering Medical Centre, Dayton , Ohio followed by a three year residency program in Ophthalmology at the University of Louisville, Kentucky, USA, which she completed in 2000. She then did a one year fellowship in Paediatric Ophthalmology and Adult Strabismus in an AAPOS certified fellowship program at the University of Iowa , under Drs. William E. Scott and Ronald Keech. She passed her American Board of Ophthalmology exam in 2002.

She is consultant in the department of Paediatric Ophthalmology at Sankara Nethralaya since October 2001. She is closely associated with the academic programs for postgraduates and optometry students and holds the position of the Director of Academics at Sankara Nethralaya since April 2006. She is the training coordinator for the Sankara Nethralaya ORBIS Paediatric Ophthalmology fellowships since August 2003.

She holds the Editorship of “Insight”, a Scientific Publication of Medical and Vision Research Foundation.

Her honors and awards include Capt. Subramaniam Best Video film award at the Tamilnadu Ophthalmic Association Meeting at Pondicherry, August 2006, Best paper award at the Kentucky Academy of Eye Physicians And Surgeons, Spring 1999, Gold Medal awarded by the Association of Resident Doctors for the Best Graduating Resident 1992 (PGIMER), Certificate of Merit for Ophthalmology (1985) Madras Medical College, Distinction in Anatomy (1982- 1983) and First certificate of merit for biochemistry (1982) Madras Medical College.

She has several peer reviewed publications both national and international to her credit. She has also delivered several invited lectures. Her areas of interest include Vision Development, Cortical Visual Impairment and Paediatric Neuro-ophthalmology, Community Paediatric Ophthalmology, Adult Strabismus, Genetic Disorders, Continuing Ophthalmic Education and Ophthalmic Postgraduate Education.
